Teen Rescues A Malnourished Baby Donkey And Nurses Him Back To Health

Most of the rescue stories we cover on Go Animals are about either cats or dogs, so when we came across this one, we knew we had to write about it. It’s about a teen that rescues a malnourished and rejected baby donkey and nurses him back into being a healthy and bouncy critter.

Payton Dankworth, a 17-year-old girl, got a call from a friend, saying that he found a baby donkey in need. The girl instantly sprung into action and ran to help the distressed animal in need. Her friend first came across the baby donkey while on a horse riding trip. The boy’s mom wouldn’t let him bring the donkey home with him, and Payton was the first name that came to his mind.

Payton said that the first night with the severely malnourished donkey was the hardest. She had to fight him to eat, and go to the bathroom to make sure that his organs were all functioning and not shutting down. Thanks to her persistence though, it wasn’t long before the baby donkey grew stronger and bigger. Within a few weeks, he was already strong enough to stand and walk on his own.

Now, a few years after that horrific first night, the donkey, who was since named Jack, is a permanent member of Payton’s family. She is his mother, as far as he’s concerned, and he follows her around wherever she goes. The mischievous donkey even occasionally visits her on her school breaks.

When he’s not following his adoptive momma around, Jack loves to spend time with her two dogs. In fact, he loves them so much that he wouldn’t go to sleep without them and cry for hours when they’re gone.

But it wasn’t only Payton who changed Jack’s life around. All the love and gratitude the girl got from Jack inspired Payton to make helping animals her full-time job. Just looking at Jack’s transformation, we can tell that Payton is a natural-born animal rescuer. Way to go!
