The poor soul was left a ‘nervous wreck’
The German shepherd was cowering in the corner exhibiting distress after being left by his owners, after finding out they would be having a baby.
Rocco was 3 years old when his family dumped him in Dallas Animal Services and Adoption Center, Texas. He was filmed by a visitor to the shelter, who had noticed Cocco look underweight and extremely scared.
She decided to take a video of Cocco who was hunched in his kennel and afraid, hoping to get him a new loving home.
Luckily, Preethi Pillaipakkam saw the video and took an interest in Rocco. Preethi fosters dogs and takes in stranded German Shepherds across Texas.
Initially, she was shocked to hear he was left because of the coming of a new baby. But after seeing his state, Pillaipakkam was understanding of the circumstances that brought the dog to the shelter.
Pillaipakkam knew it would take days for him to relax. When picking Cocco from the shelter he was noticeably skinny and depressed. According to her Cocco should weigh around 85 or 90 pounds, but only weighed in at 60.
Pillaipakkam said, ‘The shelter is certainly not the environment for a dog like Rocco. He was very timid and scared to get into the car. He even hid beneath the seat in the car. He was pacing a bit and seemed very stressed.’
Cocco’s first few days at his foster care were confusing. He was eating and walked around a bit, but was still very confused about where he was or what was happening.
With the help of Kaja, Pillaipakkam’s other german shepherd, slowly but surely Cocco has began opening up in the first weekend.
‘He slowly started exploring the house,’ Pillaipakkam said. ‘He loves the couches and his doggy beds, and he really likes squeaky toys and tennis balls. He is a really good fetcher.’
He was getting better and took to following his mum everywhere. ‘He was a bit aloof in the beginning,’ Pillaipakkam explained, ‘but now he follows me around like a shadow.’
Now, the gentle dog is playing with toys, chewing bones and becoming more and more outgoing as the days go on.
The video has attracted a lot of attention, dozens of adoption applications were received. Cocco’s Instagram page has garnered over 6,000 followers.
Pillaipakkam wants Rocco’s story to inspire people to adopt big dogs.
‘The top reasons for large dogs to be given away typically include a change in the family situation, so this could be a move, a kid, a marriage, a divorce or any such factors,” she said.
Rocco is growing happier and more confident by the day. His new home isn’t certain yet, but one thing is: He is so loved now.
Pillaipakkam hopes to find Rocco a forever home in the next few months. ‘Ideally, we would like to see Rocco placed in a new home around mid-September. We wanted to give him at least a week or two [here first] to ensure he feels safe’.
A beautiful soul deserving of a beautiful family
