The love people share with their dogs isn’t comprehensible for those who have never owned a dog before.
The assumption of pet loss shouldn’t hurt as much as a human loss is unfortunately pretty common. Some people do not understand the depth of feelings you had for your pet. Coping with losing your dog could be some times as hard as losing our human loved ones.
If you feel devastated after losing your four-legged friend, it’s completely natural, and you are not alone. It takes time to move on and feel better.
Roman, a loving dog owner from Chicago recently lost his beloved dog, Toby. While grieving on Toby, he posted some pictures of his best furry friend waiting for him to come home from work. You can see how inseparable they were in the pictures pictures below.
Their love story was unique, they didn’t get along from the start. Toby was 2 years old when he came into Roman’s life and pooped on his living room carpet. The cute pooch was his ex’s dog so he didn’t have much of a choice. Although Roman loves most dogs, this one was a very unpleasant exception. Toby was naughty, playful, always demanded lots of attention and on top of that, he was too smart for his own good. With two overwhelming personalities in one house, something had to change.
When Roman’s ex told him to treat the cute pooch like a person, he started to look at things differently. Roman put effort into having a better relationship with him and they started to become best friends.
Eight year later, when Roman and his ex broke up, he couldn’t let Toby go. As a result, they agreed that his ex will keep the apartment and he could keep Toby.
Roman shared how sensitive and friendly Toby was; He worried that kids would be rough with him but still, he was nice and friendly with them. Toby was protective of everyone, he didn’t like seeing people or animals fighting, he’d try to stop the conflict.
Roman is an optometrist who works around 8 to 10 hours a day. Toby had a sense for when Roman would get home, so he waited at the window and whined with excitement. Every time Roman went in the house he would jump on him and lick his face.
The loving dog owner could be sometimes gone for as little as 10 minutes, but Toby would be inconsolable. As soon as Roman came back, Toby would act as if his owner had been gone for years
Toby was a fighter. He underwent three serious surgeries, and the vet did not give him great odds for surviving to a ripe old age. Toby didn’t care, of course. He beat the odds and remained cheerful and happy up until the very end.
Toby outlived everyone’s expectations, he lived until the ripe old age of 16 years old.
During his final days, it became obvious that Toby would be able to continue any further. His many friends said their goodbyes and brought him to the vet. It was an incredibly painful decision, and a moment that Roman will remember for the rest of his life.
Putting a dog to sleep is one of the hardest decisions a person can make. But it’s important to focus on the good moments that were shared together, a life filled with mutual love and caring.
