Maggie, the Australian Shepherd mix, was left overnight at a Barkers Pet Motel and Grooming in Edmonton, Canada, while her parents were out of town. That was where she met the two adorable 9-month-old puppies. The two were rescued from a shelter and brought to the pet motel, as the shelter they were in couldn’t find them any foster families. It was their first night there, and they were alone and terrified. What happened next left the motel’s staff absolutely shocked.

Sandi Aldred, the owner of the pet motel, locked all the kennels for the night and set off to have dinner with her friends. Aldred uses her phone to check on the motel’s security cameras whenever she’s away, which is exactly what she did that evening.

The woman and her friends were delighted when they looked at the surveillance video. “We watched her on the cameras and she went straight around and she found their room. She paid them a lot of attention and you could see her little tail wagging.” Aldred told CBC“And she’d do the little bow down to them and poke them through the chainlink gate of their room. She just decided that was where she was going to stay until we came to get her. It was really sweet. She just had to be with those puppies.” The woman continued.

Seeing that Maggie is dealing with the situation fine, Aldred calmly finished her dinner and popped by the pet motel to make sure that everything’s fine. When she came, Maggie was already waiting for her by the door. “She came to me and she was really happy, and then she took me back to their room as if to say, ‘I really need to meet these puppies’. They were just all so happy to be together,” Aldred said. “She was nuzzling them really gently and nudging them, and then she laid down and let them cuddle with her.”

Recognizing that “The puppies needed her and she needed them,” Aldred allowed Maggie to spend the night with the puppies in their kennel. When she returned the following morning, the three were still cuddled together.

Aldred assumes that Maggie’s strong maternal instincts were due to the fact that she just weaned her own puppies days before the event. Aldred tried to convince Maggie’s parents to let her stay in the motel for a bit longer but they wanted her back (and we can’t blame them).

While Maggie’s absence was surely noticed by the pups, the staff did everything they could to make up it.  “A lot of our staff have fallen in love with them, so they’ll take them home in the evenings and let them have a home environment for the night.” Aldred said.
