Animals face an endless list of challenges when it comes to finding a home. Many of them are forced to wait for months if not years, while others will never find a caring owner. Thankfully, there are unsung heroes that do everything they can to provide these innocent victims with a place they can call home. They spend hours and days of their lives heroically trying to attract potential owners, utilizing a variety of creative methods.
Perhaps when you think of such heroes, you envision an elderly lady spending her free time at the local cat shelter. Or maybe you imagine a muscular Superman flying through the sky, flowing cape behind him, rescuing dogs from burning skyscrapers. In both cases, you couldn’t be further off. This story is about a 12-year-old boy from New Jersey.
Darius Brown is young and inexperienced, but what he lacks in the age department he more than makes up for in motivation and creativity. Darius found a unique and brilliant way to call attention to animals in need- he began creating stylish bow ties. He then donated these bow ties to local animal shelters, these colorful creations attracting visitors and potential owners.
Darius himself is no stranger to hardship. He was diagnosed with speech, comprehension, and fine motor skills delay but continued to persevere and overcome his disability. By the age of 8, he was assisting his sister with cutting the fabric for his bow ties, where he discovered his unique talent. Without a moment of hesitation, he began to use his talent for good.
By the age of 11, Darius founded the company “Beaux & Paws.” This company designed unique bow ties for people and their favorite pets. Despite his young age, Darius was able to balance his talent for business with the ability to give back to the community. He has donated countless bow ties to adoption centers and animal shelters worldwide. As his 43 thousand Instagram followers can attest, Darius is well aware of the needs of the world around him.
Darius Brown is also no stranger to tragedy. After two devastating hurricanes in 2017, many domesticated became homeless, left to fend for themselves. Some were transferred to various shelters all over the country. Because of the lack of people willing to adopt them, these animals faced euthanasia. Darius was unwilling to give up, he put hours upon hours into making these animals stand out and catch the eye of potential owners. As a result, thousands of animals received makeovers, wearing cute accessories, just waiting to be picked by the perfect human.
Even though he’s barely 12 years old, Darius has an impressive resume. He has had multiple TV and newspaper appearances, recognized by celebrities and world leaders alike. Former President Barack Obama gave Darius Brown a letter of recognition, in which he wrote: “From founding Beaux and Paws to lifting up the lives of those around you, it’s clear you are doing your part to look out for your fellow citizens. And I trust you take tremendous pride in all you have accomplished. As long as you stay engaged in the world around you, continue looking for ways to help others and never give up on yourself, I’m confident our future will be bright.”
As of now, he has received the Leadership Award from Leaders of the Future No Limits, Outstanding Achievement Award from the WDIB Conference, the Youth Changer Award from “Excel Honors” and soon will achieve the Jasmina Anema Youth Award from the “Black Cotton Foundation.” Without a doubt, as he continues in his altruistic patch, he will continue to earn more honors.
His 21-year-old sister, Dazhai, has joined his efforts in saving neglected and homeless animals. She has launched a fundraiser inviting people to participate in Darius’ mission, volunteering in shelters nationwide.
